(Honesdale, November 22, 2023)… As of January 2nd, 2024, Wayne Memorial Hospital will be accepting patients for its new Urology Department and scheduling appointments with its newest staff member, board-certified urologist Donald L. Preate Jr., MD, FACS.
“Dr. Preate has been practicing urology for close to three decades, most of it in northeast Pennsylvania,” said Wayne Memorial CEO James Pettinato, BSN, MHSA, CCRN-K. “He is highly respected by both patients in our area and medical professionals. We are extremely pleased that he decided to join us.”
Born in Scranton, Dr. Preate graduated from the University of Scranton and then went on to medical school at Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. After graduating in 1995, he completed both an internship and urology residency at “HUP,” the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, also in Philadelphia. Since that time, Dr. Preate has enjoyed privileges at hospitals in both Lackawanna and Luzerne counties, including Geisinger (Community Medical Center, Wyoming Valley) and Commonwealth Health facilities (Moses Taylor, Regional). He was most recently affiliated with the Lehigh Valley Hospital system.
For 21 years, Dr. Preate was a member of the former Delta Medix, a multi-specialty surgical group co-founded by his father, Donald Preate, MD, and based in Scranton. Dr. Preate Jr. was president of Delta Medix for its last five years, 2016-2021.
Dr. Preate referenced his father’s “legacy of patient care” for his own latest professional move. “One of the reasons I chose to come to Wayne Memorial is the hospital’s commitment to the same model of physician-patient care we practiced at Delta Medix,” said Dr. Preate, “where the patient always comes first.”
In addition to practicing medicine, Dr. Preate has an extensive administrative and academic career. Current and past posts have included Chief of Staff at Moses Taylor Hospital, Chief of Urology at Regional Hospital, clinical assistant professor at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, professor in the Physician Assistant Teaching Program at Marywood University and Secretary-Treasurer of the Lackawanna County Medical Society.
Dr. Preate will be joined in early 2024 by board-certified urologist Irwin Goldstein, MD, who must fulfill another commitment before coming to Wayne Memorial.
Urologists treat conditions such as prostate cancer, penile and testicular cancer, bladder and renal cancer, lower urinary tract symptoms, urinary incontinence and urinary tract infections—and more.
“This is a win-win for Wayne Memorial,” said Pettinato, “Our patient surveys repeatedly point to urology as a top need in our area, and now we are happy to say we have Dr. Preate on board to offer that service.”
Dr. Preate, and eventually Dr. Goldstein, will see patients inside a new office at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Appointments can be made by calling (570) 253-8201. Please visit UROLOGY – Wayne Memorial Hospital (wmh.org)
Other specialties at Wayne Memorial include general and interventional cardiology, nephrology, neurology, pulmonology, gastroenterology and general surgery.
