Midwife Christina MacDowell Practicing at Women’s Health Center

Honesdale, PA (December 27, 2017)—The Women’s Health Center, part of Wayne Memorial Community Health Centers, is pleased to announce that Certified Nurse Midwife Christina MacDowell has joined the practice as its newest provider. Christina holds office hours at the Women’s Health Center’s Honesdale location at 110 Park Street.

As a Nurse Midwife, Christina provides prenatal, intrapartum and postpartum care to obstetrical patients. She facilitates births at New Beginnings Birthing Suites, the maternity unit of Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale where over 420 births have taken place in 2017 to date. MacDowell also sees gynecological patients for exams, family planning needs and acute minor gynecological problems.

MacDowell initially considered becoming a physician; however, her decision was swayed after witnessing a midwifery birth, “I shadowed an OB/GYN who worked with midwives. I observed a birth that was attended by a midwife and it changed my life! I enrolled in nursing school with the intent of becoming a midwife.”

MacDowell has been part of the Wayne Memorial family for more than seven years. She was a member of Luzerne County Community College’s first Nursing Class at the Wayne Memorial Hospital Campus. She then transitioned into the role of Registered Nurse specializing in maternity at New Beginnings, a position she served in for nearly five years while continuing her education. Christina earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Penn State University and a Master of Science degree in Nursing/Nurse Midwifery from Frontier Nursing University, Hyden, KY.

“I greatly enjoyed working with Christina while she was a labor and delivery nurse,” stated Patricia Konzman, CNM, who has been practicing midwifery with the Women’s Health Center for 25 years. “It’s just amazing to have seen her go through the process of becoming a midwife and to now welcome her to our practice.”

Women’s Health Center accepts most private insurances, Medicare, medical assistance and participates in Pennsylvania’s Healthy Beginnings Plus Program. A sliding-fee scale is offered for those who qualify. For more information or to make an appointment, call 570-253-3005.
