Interventional Radiologist Charles Sutton, MD Joins WMH

(Honesdale, Pa, February 13, 2024) … Charles Sutton, MD, a board-certified interventional radiologist with more than 30 years’ experience in medicine, is now treating patients at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Interventional radiologists perform procedures using medical imaging such as CAT scans, ultrasound and x-rays to diagnose and treat diseases in the body’s organs and blood vessels. Dr. Sutton, who grew up in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, is the first fulltime interventional radiologist to be employed at the Honesdale-based hospital.

“We are pleased to be able to offer this expanded service,” said Robert Brzuchalski, CRA, RT, RDMS, director of Diagnostic Imaging & Cardiac Services. “Unlike traditional surgery, most Interventional Radiology (IR) procedures can be performed with a local anesthetic and sedation.  This means less pain for patients and a faster recovery.”

IR can be used to diagnose many conditions, such as whether a tumor is benign or is cancer.  IR can also treat many conditions, including abscess infections, abnormal fluid collections, kidney failure, sudden gallbladder disease, and provide safe access to treat kidney stones. Some of the most common IR procedures are biopsies, angiograms, catheterizations and drainage of infections.

Following his training in Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, Dr. Sutton taught radiology in New York City, then worked at numerous area hospitals, including Moses Taylor, Mercy Hospital, and Regional in Scranton. Dr. Sutton helped Geisinger Wyoming Valley establish an IR service in Wilkes Barre.  He has also performed IR for Foundation Radiology (now Rayus), which is currently under contract for Wayne Memorial Hospital.  Dr. Sutton received his medical degree from Stanford University in California and training in surgery, radiology and interventional radiology from, respectively, the University Hospitals of Cleveland, the Cleveland Clinic, Harvard Medical School in Boston and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.

“We can see very well into the human body with current medical imaging,” said Dr. Sutton, “so we can treat many conditions using guidance with imaging, rather than surgery. I am glad to be able to bring it to Wayne Memorial’s extensive physician referral base and help treat our patients.”

Wayne Memorial’s Imaging Services Department also offers computed tomography, MRI, pet scans, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, x-rays, bone density testing and digital mammography. More information can be found at https://www.wmh.org.
