WAYNE MEMORIAL CATH LAB RE-ACCREDITED 2020

(Honesdale, December 29, 2020)…The Heart & Vascular Center at Wayne Memorial Hospital, also known as a cardiac catheterization laboratory, has once again  “met or exceeded”  the requirements established by the Pennsylvania Department of Health for successful re-accreditation for one year. Corazon, the approved accreditation agency, noted in its report that Wayne Memorial Hospital has “demonstrated a commitment to providing the highest quality level of care to their patient community.”

Requirements for the rigorous accreditation process include providing quarterly reports and 24-hour coverage for PCI emergencies. PCI, or percutaneous coronary intervention, formerly known as angioplasty with stent, is a procedure that uses a catheter (a thin flexible tube) to open up blood vessels in the heart narrowed by plaque buildup.  The condition, known as atherosclerosis, can be life threatening. Since it was launched in 2016, Wayne Memorial’s Heart & Vascular Center has treated more than 1,700 patients.

“The re-accreditation is evidence of our Heart & Vascular team’s dedication and hard work,” said James Hockenbury, director Ancillary Services. “It also shows Wayne Memorial Hospital’s commitment to quality cardiac care.”

Hockenbury said the cath lab has expanded services since its inauguration. In addition to PCI procedures, pacemaker and defibrillator placement, the Heart & Vascular Center also offers  peripheral vascular procedures  (diagnostic and interventional).

General cardiology services at Wayne Memorial Hospital also include Holter monitoring, stress testing (exercise and pharmacologic), echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, nuclear cardiac scanning and implantation of heart monitoring devices.  Wayne Memorial also offers a Cardiac Rehabilitation program for patients who have undergone a cardiac event.

The Medical Director of the Heart & Vascular Center is Walid Hassan, MD, FAHA, FACC, FCCP, FSCAI  a board-certified interventional cardiologist.
