Alzheimer’s & Communication Strategies – FREE Program
(Honesdale, January 17, 2020)…A free evening of “education and fellowship” on the topic of effective communication strategies for caregivers and patients with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia will take place on Tuesday, February 25th from 5:30pm – 7:00pm at the Park Street Complex, 648 West Park Street, Honesdale. Representatives from the Alzheimer’s Association, the Wayne County Area Agency on Aging and Wayne Memorial will facilitate the discussion with the aim of increasing awareness and access to quality dementia care in Wayne, Pike and surrounding counties.
“One of the key elements of Alzheimer’s – and many other forms of dementia—is that the patient’s understanding of what’s being communicated and how they can communicate in return changes as the disease evolves,” said Carol Kneier, MS, RD, LDN, CDE, Wayne Memorial Community Relations manager. Kneier said the evening will focus on communication changes, decoding verbal and behavioral messages and learning how to respond, and identifying strategies to help people connect and communicate.
Participants will also catalog available resources and services and discuss met and unmet needs in these areas.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, as of 2019, nearly six million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer’s dementia. This number includes an estimated 5.6 million people age 65 and older and approximately 200,000 individuals under age 65 who have younger-onset Alzheimer’s.
The program is being presented by Wayne Memorial, the Area Agency on Aging, PA Link and the Alzheimer’s Association. It will include a light dinner.
