Respiratory

A Matter of Breath

When it’s trouble free, we simply take breathing for granted but for those who suffer from chronic lung problems, have been injured or are recovering from surgery, each breath can be a major achievement. Under the medical direction of Pulmonologist and Sleep Medicine Specialist Dr. Sean McVeigh, the Respiratory Therapy Department at Wayne Memorial Hospital helps patients to recover and maintain lung function through the diagnosis, treatment and management of their pulmonary issues.

The Respiratory Department is active in all patient care settings and provides around the clock services to all WMH departments. The department is staffed with credentialed and licensed Respiratory Care Practitioners who are certified in basic, advanced and pediatric life support. Outpatient testing services are available by physician’s prescription.

Respiratory Therapists consult with physicians regarding a patient’s diagnosis, selection of tests required and course of therapy on a routine basis. You may receive any of the following tests when being treated by the Respiratory Department:

Arterial Blood Gas Test

An Arterial Blood Gas Test (ABG) measures the acidity (PH) and the level of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood from an artery. This test is used to check how well your lungs are able to move oxygen into and remove carbon dioxide from the blood.

Pulmonary Function Test

PFT are a group of tests that measure how well the lungs take in and release air. They also measure how efficiently the lungs move gasses such as oxygen from the atmosphere into the body’s circulation.

Fiber Optic Bronchoscopy

This test allows the clinician to view airways or get tissue samples from the lungs via a thin tube with a camera on its tip. This tube is placed into the lungs through the nose or mouth and sends pictures back to a video screen by way of the camera.

Bronchial Provocation Testing

Bronchial Provocation testing evaluates how sensitive your airways are. During this test a bronchial constrictive drug is administered and a spirometer is used to measure lung function and monitor changes.

Six Minute Walk Oximetery

This test measures the distance a person can walk quickly on a hard, flat surface for six minutes and reflects the patient’s ability to perform daily physical activities.

Overnight Oximetery

Oximetery is a test that measures your oxygen level and heart rate. When used overnight, a continuous measurement can be graphed. The patterns that are produced can assist the physician in determining the need for a sleep study.

Room Air Pulse Oximetery

Pulse oximetry is the non-invasive method that measures the oxygenation of a person’s hemoglobin when breathing room air.

Test Preparation

Loose comfortable clothing is appropriate for most tests. Sturdy shoes or sneakers are required for the Six Minute Walk Oximetery Test. Check with your physician for any additional instructions or questions you may have regarding medications, inhalers or fasting.
