Midwives Invite Women of All Ages to Annual Mingle and High Tea

Certified Nurse Midwives Pat Konzman and Sheela Porter-Smith will be hosting the afternoon gathering, now in its fifth consecutive year. The mingle is an opportunity to honor all women: pregnant or not; mothers or not. It celebrates the midwife’s role of facilitating women as they make transitions in their life: menarche, birth, menopause. It also allows individuals to explore how midwives provide obstetrical and gynecological treatment and support throughout the life cycle.

“Midwifery is really a multi-generational practice,” stated Porter-Smith. “The Mingle gives us a chance to see some of our patients who have given birth with us and admire their new babies. However, we encourage all women to attend. Midwifery is not limited to childbirth.”

Educational booths manned by healthcare professionals such as physical therapists, dietitians and dental personnel will be available for guests to ask questions and obtain information appropriate to the unique needs of women. Chair massages will be performed. Tours of Wayne Memorial’s New Beginnings Birthing Suites will be given and kid-friendly activities such as face painting will go on throughout the afternoon. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments including herbal teas and pastries will be served. No registration is required to attend.

Wayne Memorial Hospital’s obstetrics unit has utilized midwifery services for over 20 years. The Women’s Health Center’s certified nurse midwives offer prenatal care; childbirth (including water births); gynecology exams; family planning needs and menopausal counseling. In order to ensure the highest quality of care midwives have 24-hour physician backup for all births. No home births are performed.
