Women’s Health Center Partnering with Maternal and Family Health Services at Pike County
“Our staff felt it was very important to reach out to area women in need of these particular services,” stated Frederick Jackson, executive director of Wayne Memorial Community Health Centers. “The closure of Milford Family Planning Center created a void that needed to be filled.”
Women between the ages of 18 and 44 are encouraged to contact Janet Miller, certified medical assistant, who is serving as Women’s Health Center’s coordinator for the MFHS program to best determine which benefits they may be eligible to receive.
“Through our association with MFHS we are able to offer low-cost general family planning services based upon income, more comprehensive coverage for women enrolled in the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s SelectPlan for Women, as well as free, confidential services for teenage women,” stated Miller. “Women with private insurance can be eligible for some of these services. For instance, if the patient’s insurance does not cover family planning and contraceptives and the specific income guidelines are met, a woman may qualify.”
Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare’s SelectPlan is a voluntary Family Planning Waiver Program designed to increase the availability of free services to women throughout Pennsylvania, including many working women. Staff of The Women’s Health Center has received training to assist women through the application process for the SelectPlan.
Enrollment in the SelectPlan for Women entitles patients to the following benefits at no cost: family planning related exams; family planning related outpatient office visits; FDA approved contraceptives; pap smears; testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases and HIV testing and counseling.
“The plan does not cover diagnostic testing such as mammography, ultrasounds, MRIs or CAT Scans,” expressed Miller. “However, some women may be eligible for free mammography services through the Komen Foundation.”
