What does a WMH volunteer do?
There are many possible volunteer assignments available that may meet your interests and skill level. These include:

  • Greeting and directing patients and visitors
  • Providing clerical and general assistance in various hospital departments
  • Escorting patients throughout the facility
  • Distributing patient mail
  • Circulating the book cart throughout patient floors
  • Visiting patients
  • Providing general assistance to the nursing staff on patient floors

How old must I be to volunteer?
Wayne Memorial Hospital accepts volunteers who are at least thirteen years of age. There are three different groups of volunteers, including:

  • Adult Volunteers (ages 18 and up)
  • Teen Volunteers (ages 13 to 17)
  • Special Project Volunteers (incorporate volunteer service into school/college projects)
  • Hospice Volunteers (minimum age of 18 require; assist Hospice Team in delivering comfort care to patients during the last stages of terminal illness)

How can I become a Wayne Memorial Hospital Volunteer?

The easiest way to become a volunteer is to contact the volunteer coordinator who can assist you through the process, which includes:

  • Being at least thirteen years of age
  • Contacting WMH Volunteer Services by telephone (570) 253-8737 or email malicky@wmh.org for an application or more information
  • Scheduling an individual interview, which will allow for discussion about your interests, scheduling needs, etc.
  • Attending a Volunteer Orientation, which will provide you with the necessary information about the hospital’s policies/procedures regarding volunteers, health/safety, infection control, confidentiality, etc.
  • Touring the facility with the Volunteer Services staff, which will help you feel comfortable in the hospital
  • Obtaining more specific training that is related to your assignment
